The idea for Flights of Fancy came in 1999. Debra Fuhrman, mother of four, was having trouble finding high quality dress-up clothes at a reasonable price. As a former teacher, she knew the importance of imaginative play in intellectual development.

At that time, her girls favored “princess-style” dress-up clothes. Pulling her sewing machine out of the closet, she began designing and creating princess dresses. As the girls grew, their taste changed and they wanted “glamour girl” dresses and accessories.

Favoring the movie star style of long ago as opposed to the barely there look of today’s celebrities, Debra began designing dress-up clothes again.

In 2001, mothers began asking Debra to make dress-up clothes for their daughters – and sons! A business was born soon after.

“Imagination Wear for the young and young at heart” became our motto as mothers begged us not to forget dress-up clothes and accessories for their sons in addition to adult costumes for Halloween.

The party plan format was preferred as it would allow mothers and daughters to host friends, enjoy each other’s company, and the girls could model the representative fashions at the party.

The desire to bring moms and kids together, explore the use of dress-up clothes in imaginative play, and offer a high quality product at a reasonable price will undoubtedly set us apart in the years to come.
